Afrieros presents: Female condom use in Botswana

Myafrica reports on the use of Female condom in dealing with Sexually transmitted disease in Botswana.
"Officially relaunched as ‘Bliss’ by a local creative and marketing firm, the new name and packaging are expected to encourage more women to make use of it."

In the media: Foreign investment and Tanzania

Afrieros presents:African sexual life-Tanzania

My Africa site discusses the sexual life of ethnic groups in Tanzania
"
A chief instructress (Bimkubwa, grandmother) supervises preparations for vaginal distension in the first night . Sexual instructions are given and obscene songs are practised. “Vaginal” distension is practised. The hymen is not ruptured. Girls are made familiar with the facts of sexual intercourse by the application of an egg. They are taught the motions of the sexual act. With red inumbati powder they are taught about the menses.Boys are circumcised, and a taboo on sexual intercourse rests upon the boys until they are healed. At the rite, boys are told about sexual purity, sexual disease through impurity and about menstruation using symbolism . This would occur at ages nine to sixteen.A clay phallic object is used in defloration at the end of chiputu. Instructions are given by means of song and explicit clay figurines including themes of defloration, conception, orgasmic timing, and intercourse taboos."

As we see sexuality is far of being taboo in many parts of the continent. There is a more than basic knowledge about sex and all that it encompasses on a social, cultural, physiological and marital level.
The question that comes to mind is where does this intresic knowledge combine with urban sexual lifestyle and what does it create.

In the media: 24 hrs Pan-African news channel

An around the news network "a la" CNN should be birth by the end of 2007 Olunyi David Ajao reports. Is this a sign that 2007 will be as innovative and exciting as 2006 has been ? I will not differ, there is a current of resurrection sweeping through Africa at the moment. This force has been building up slowly ,pushing transformation and new paradigms in our societies. You and I are the agent of change.
We should note that a creative brew of companies have been entering the Pan-African TV industry, Africa Channel,Tele3A Sud,Trace TV,MTV Africa,Canal Plus Africa, to name but a few.

see also Broadcast papers

In the media: Paypal goes deeper inside Africa

Oluniyi David Ajao reports that "
The popular online financial institution has now extended its services to Botswana, Cape Verde, Namibia, Togo and Tunisia, on the African continent. In all the six countries however, users can only send, and not receive funds via paypal".
Finally it seems that Paypal starts to understand the opportunities available in the African market. This move should certainly facilitate the expansion of existing African E-businesses.
It will also be interesting to see the reaction of the African online payment players such as Ivory Coast moneycash and Nigerian chezolapay.
The pleasing fact are the wealth/job creation and improved consumer satisfaction that will be as a result.

Afritourism: Kenya- Peponi hotel

"Peponi is a small hotel on the exotic island of Lamu, in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Kenya, the very root of Swahili culture, which spread centuries ago down the East African Coast. Small and personal, it is the perfect hide away holiday from the hustle and bustle of the Afriurban life".

Afribusiness presents: Online business-Afriquachat

Afriquachat could have become the African version of Ebay if they had dared to push the concept a bit further. They would settle with being the African version of Amazon. They offer diverse electronic products for now, the plus they have over any other E-commerce site( African consumer centered) is the option of purchasing in CFA francs, a currency (Click to see its history)used in more than 14 countries.
This francophone internet company is entering a market that is destined to grow as more Africans access the internet though their internet ready cellphones, faster connection for their computers and increasing methods of online payment such as monecash, chezolapay

Afriurban sounds presents: Tour de Garde- Baby Boy

Let's look at another talented group that is leading the way in the rebirth of the Ivorian hip hop sound.Their name is Tour de Garde, they are young ,they are hip and they blow some fresh air into the industry.

In the media: It is time to have an African Paypal or Ebay

White African writes about the timely need for professionals involved in information technology to build the next EBay , the next Myspace or the next Delicious, in Africa. We can wish for multinational companies to move in and service the African consumers, but one factor to keep in consideration is that African markets have their own specificities, that only native professionals and consultants may understand.
"...The tech giants can do incredible things with all the money and experience that they have. They are, on top of the web world because they are good at what they do. However, that position brings with it a level of arrogance that makes them believe that they can recreate their Western successes in non-Western settings."
So if you have an idea , do not hesitate, implement and foreign capital and partners should come to you.

Africaincorp: wealth building through Investment part 1

One of the reason for creating this blog was the strong desire to converse on wealth building. Too many time Discussion among young, African profesionals, college students remain on a futile level when it comes to conscious and organized wealth creation. We must find a way to put to good use our formal ( as well as informal) education. We live in a system where access to and control of ressources( labor, funds, technology, information, invention, commodities) ease the building of appropriate living conditions for the members of society.
Capital being one of the major reasons for folding plans , let's take a look at a couple of companies that can assist in that matter:

Liquid Africa To invest and manage your Sub-saharan portfolio online

Lionstonecompany To acquire companies in Africa,to raise capital on the Africa stock market.

Angel Africa To secure Venture capital.

Nozala investments To invest and manage your sub-saharan portfolio

One should concentrate on the product/service one wants to offer but more importantly the individual would like to be rightly informed on the industry/market that is entered:

2007 Afriurban appetizers

The Image of Africa:

The Chinese connection:
- About 30 Chinatowns, each housing 2000 or more Chinese workers, have been established in parts of Africa.
-Oil-rich Angola, is central to China's strategic African plans; a country to be flattered and indulged through aid and cheap loans in exchange for oil and minerals.
-About 900 trade deals are happening throughout the continent. China is about to begin building a $8.3 billion railway to connect the northern Nigerian city of Kano to the port city of Lagos - the state-run China National Offshore Oil Corporation having paid $2.3bn this year for a 45% stake in Nigeria's Akpo oilfield, 200 kilometres offshore.
-Africa has lost nearly 500,000 jobs in its textile factories over the past decade as a result of cheap Chinese imports. In Zambia, only 20 textile factories remain out of 250 just 20 years ago.
- Wang Jianpin, a businessman from a city in east China's Zhejiang Province, shifted one fourth of the production capacity of his Hasan Shoes Co. to Nigeria in 2006. Wang has decided to invest a further six million U.S. dollars.
- Trade between China and Africa increased from just under 10 billion U.S. dollars to nearly 40 billion U.S. dollars, and is likely to surpass 50 billion dollars in 2006 and hit 80 billion dollars in 201
The Year 2007 in music:
Our wish at Africaincorp is that the African music industry shareholders live up to their economic potential.
- There is a definite amelioration of the quality of the sound and image.
-The Afriurban public even if global, still has a greater interest in home grown sounds.
- Afriurban sounds such as Kwaito, Coupe Decale,Hip-Life,Kuduru,Bongo Flava must cross-over in all other regional markets.

The economic outlook:
-Africa economy as a whole is expected to grow by 5.8 %

The question that comes to mind is how much of the existing wealth and new growth have been shared by the majority of the population. What are the tools available to the public to enjoy their rights as shareholders of their respective country's economy ? We can even go further as to consider sharing in Africa's wealth. we live in a transnational world after all and we can see transnational companies can earn a profit beyond their home countries, individuals and group of individuals should be able to do the same.
Will this generation of entrepreneurs, businessmen, executives, policy makers step up to the challenge? Will they be able to direct their fellow citizens on the path of ownership and everything it implies ?

In the media: Bokassa- Giscard, The Africangate

One of the many resolutions for 07 is to be a better informed leader. I was once told that what makes a great leader is, his/her understanding of the environment they are roaming in ,whether it be political, economical, cultural or industrial. As a member( by birth) of the new generation of African leaders and a soon to be leader of the new African school of thoughts( by choice) I and you must push the mental comprehension of the socio-cultural/economic conditions.
For those of you that understand the french language, here are two documentaries exposing another Africangate along the lines of the Mobutu King of Zaire,Idi Amin and Charles Taylor . These documentaries allow us to look at the past actions to comprehend the present circumstances.
As a novice historian you should know that before they were blood diamonds , there were Central Africa Diamonds.
Under the regime of the "Emperor" Bokassa ,who was one of the great dictator that Africa collected during the 60's and 70's , a scandal ,that some observers said cost the presidency to Giscard d'Estaing, emerged in the media.

"The whole celebration takes three days, of which on the last day there is the actual dance. On the morning of this day the girls are delivered by government vehicles to a stadium where the interested public is waiting to watch, including royalty. The girls show up in their traditional attires and looking their best to be presentable to the public. On this day the king Mswati III delivers a speech addressing his subjects on wide ranging issues like HIV/AIDS."

"It also prepares the girls for marriage/relationships. Since there is a lot of groupwork involved, good communication skills are developed that help in solving a lot of problems in marriages. There are also elder women at the camps that advise the girls on marriage related issues and how to handle themselves in a dignified manner."source myafrica

Africaincorp 07 resolutions

It has been quite an interesting 365 days for the Afriurban community , we discovered along the readers the multiple facets and nature of this giant culture. 06 felt like the year of Africa, let's see we had,Madonna-Angelina-Jay-z-Will smith-Pharrel-Russel Simon-Alicia Keys-Dave Chapelle-Bill Gates-Live 8-MTV Africa-Big Brother.07 should remain the same as we shall ride the clamour caused by a (media stamped) trendy Africa. The Afriurban Xperience will be through the publication of more ,businesses profiles, music videos, short business documentaries , Afriurban movie reviews, Literature recommendation, suggested links and much more.
The biggest resolution for 07 is to move from just exposing the value of urban Africa to articulating the ways to help it reach its full business potential. China,India,Brazil,Amazon,Microsoft and the rest of universe is coming to Africa.
This is a lot of attention, too much attention for Africans to ignore it and not pay as much attention to their own continent.
Next year, we are going to spot industry trends, analyse industries shareholders and suggest growth-oriented strategy for the many sectors of activity in Africa.
Real estate, modeling, health, new technology, biology, retail, fashion, farming, tourism, banking, software programming, telecommunication, leisure, stock trading,education,transportation,development,commodities,.... and the list go on. The major difference is that we are going to focus on the business of doing retail,farming,etc...

P.S: Nations to look out for in the year to come: Nigeria,South Africa,Uganda,Kenya,Rwanda,Botswana,Morocco,Angola,Ivory Coast,Mozambique and Tunisia.
Happy new year and stay focus.

In the media: African nations need to learn the world markets

The African executive has an interesting article, on Africa urgent need to better understand and assess world markets. African nations are home to most of the world commodities: cotton,Oil,Natural gas,Gold,Cocoa,Coffee,Timber etc..
A better understanding of the chain of production and how the value-adding process is working would help increase Africa exports revenues. The example of the BRIC's nations should serve as a modifiable blueprint .
Here an excerpt :
"
Africa has to go out into the world and learn markets. Chinese companies went to Ghana and studied kinte cloth, and now you can buy Chinese cloth that emulates kinte that is cheaper than the local cloth.

My point is that Africa has been far more passive than other regions of the world, which have aggressively gone into world markets, committed funds and staff to study those markets, found gaps in trade law, learnt the rules of packaging, the details of sanitary standards and built relationships with retail chains and wholesalers who buy products.

All of that must be done before Africa can open up new export opportunities. In general Africa is not doing it. Where it happens it is the product of individual entrepreneurs or multinationals, who then reap all the profit."

What do you think of that ?

We continue our journey in the Coupe Decale universe. What is enjoyable about this Ivorian industry is the level of professionalism and creativity you can see in the musical production, the video concepts, the choreography. The Ivory coast is really building back the foundation that would make them a pillar in the African music/entertainment industry.
Such a position is only possible when the different players, producers, artists,DJ's,Night club owners, distributors, promoters, video directors and such understand their role in the value-adding production chain.
What we hope to see in the next month is more direct, interactive distribution network s established. One that would take the artist product to the coupe decale fans across the globe straight to their Ipods, cellphones, computers,TV sets and CD/DVD players.

Africinema presents: Africa Paradis

Africinema presents a Benin Sci-fi production Untitled Africa Paradis ( 2006).The movie directed by Sylvestre Amoussou has the following story.

Synopsis:"In 2033 every European wants to go to Africa as there is work on the continent instead of war and poverty. But the United States of Africa doesn’t want to accept loads of European migrants. Olivier and Pauline – he’s an engineer and she’s a teacher – are battling to find employment and decide to emigrate to the United States of Africa and start a new life as they’ve heard it is the Promised Land. Unfortunately they don’t manage to get an entry visa and are forced to enter the continent illegally thanks to the help of a smuggler. Africa Paradis cleverly explores the themes of xenophobia and racism and was inspired by the real circumstances of today’s migrants in Europe."

The movie is a imaginary tale that turns the table around , Africans are put in the position of Europeans and vice versa. It just a human story which we hope will teach us ,that as citizen of the(same) world we should be more understanding and tolerant of each other. Let's hope that policy makers (and enforcers ) ,realize the human element present in all social issues.

Here is the trailer( in french ):

Afriurban sounds presents: Bongo flava group-BDP

Although Bongo Flava is a purely Tanzanian phenomenon, its use of Swahili and its strong roots in the East African reality means thatThe name Bongo Flava comes from the Kiswahili word for brains: ubongo. "Bongo" is the nick name of Dar es Salaam, referring to the brains one supposedly needs to survive there. Bongo Flava is about the street, as its name suggests. Most of the artists in this scene are from or based in Dar es Salaam -- living, working and studying in the unofficial heart of the country. The 'flava' they create -- is varied and cutting edge -- and is unique to the city and its people. the music translates across borders with a growing fan-base throughout the East African region

Africaincorp best: The least corrupt African nations in 2006

We would like to follow up on our best nations to live in Africa list, with the ranking of the least corrupt nations in Africa. The list is from the corruption perception index as released by transparency International.
The site Investing in Africa makes mention of the list and the comments are courtesy of their editor.
Africa like any other economic market, is going to develop areas of growth. These areas have the perfect combination of capital concentration, skilled labor, population concentration, policies and such.

1) Botswana - Once again ranked the least corrupt nation in Africa and outscored 11 EU member states. Its global ranking, however, fell from 32 to 37 this year, and its total score fell from 5.9 to 5.6.

2) Mauritius - The island nation posted the most rapid improvement in this year's index. Its score surged from 4.2 last year to 5.1 this year, leapfrogging South Africa and Namibia and into second place.

3) South Africa - The Rainbow Nation improved its score slightly due to (in spite of?) some highly publicized corruption cases, notably one involving former deputy President Jacob Zuma.

4) Namibia - Launched an Anti-Corruption Commission this year. Even so, its CPI score slipped a bit from last year.

5) Ghana - The country is very unhappy that its CPI ranking and score fell this year. A government spokesperson reminded the media that the country recently enacted a wide range of anti-corruption legislation. The controversy highlights a key aspect of the CPI. It does not claim to be a scientific assessment of actual levels of corruption. Instead, it measures analysts' perceptions of corruption. Unfortunately, in the international investment game, perception of corruption often outweighs reality.

6) Tanzania - Held steady at a not-so-hot score of 2.9.

7) Malawi - Ranking fell slightly from 2.8 to 2.7.

8) Uganda - Notched a modest gain from 2.5 to 2.8.

9) Zambia - Held steady at 2.6. Hopefully Mwanawasa will now be emboldened to take further action against corruption following his presidential election victory.

10) Kenya - A slight improvement for Kenya from a very low base. Not sure if this is [thanks to] or [in spite of] the handling of the Anglo Leasing scandal.

11) Nigeria - Africa's most populous nation made a rather substantial gain from 1.9 last year to 2.2 this year. I'm guessing this is due to Obasanjo's reforms. Hopefully, this perception will continue to improve next year after the April presidential election.

Life hits us all as hard.

Afriupdate: Blood diamond the movie

Dear people, the movie Blood Diamond is a must-see.I watched it yesterday night and I came out of the screening feeling very hopeful for our continent. I am saying, i was able to see the big picture being painted in front of my eyes by the director. As for all goods and services there is chain of production along which the goods and services are moved and added value too.
(Blood) diamonds are no different, the movie taught me that Africans are like a mad dog chasing their own tail. The nations of Africa with intelligent and noble people in charge will advance, the ones with venomous and dumb as fuck leaders will perish.
Be prepared to be honest, hardworking, intelligent and productive citizen of your country, that is all Africa needs (really.) The people make the country, if any African country is in the pit, the inhabitants need to look for the diamond inside.

P.S good acting by the whole cast from the young actors to Leonardo Dicaprio,Djimon Honsou and the leading female character.

Danger Mouse and Tony Allen are working on a album called Kingdom of Doom.

Watch and listen to Tony Allen explain what he expects from this album:

Afriupdate : Blood Diamond released Dec 8 Th

Here is a song out of the blood diamond soundtrack. The movie is coming out this week and it features Leonardo Dicaprio and Djimon Honsou. The movie is a vivid depiction of the environment brought about by civil wars fueled by the illegal selling of diamonds by rebel forces in countries such as Sierra Leone and Liberia. The wars are over but a new battle awaits governements and society, the reconstruction and healing of the communties and people affected by years of senseless( but centsfull) violence.
The video is very much ill ,and can be perceived as a sequel to the conflict diamond track by Kanye West.

In the media: 50 best Afriurban artists

Annansi Chronicles pointed out the article by the British newspaper the independent, where a extended list of the best artists, from writer to musicians, of the continent was discussed. They smartly note the monetary value, the art industry can bring to African economies. They should maybe point out that individuals and firms with a more business oriented mindset should enter the industry.
Any industry in order to become a profit-grossing ,work- generating industry needs the presence of true mavericks, visionary and builders.
Too many shady individuals are involved in industries, trade ,politics for whole industries and markets to head in the right direction.
Do not lose hope, there a couple things happening that indicate we might see the light pretty soon.

Let's check the list:
• Oga Steve Abah, Playwright (Nigeria)
• Chinua Achebe, Author (Nigeria)
• David Adjaye, Architect (Tanzania)
• Newton Aduaka, Film Director (Nigeria)
• Mahmoud Ahmed, Musician (Ethiopia)
• Ama Ata Aidoo, Playwright (Ghana)
• Amadou And Mariam, Musicians (Mali)
• Ayi Kwei Armah, Author (Ghana)
• Les Ballets Africains, Dancers And Musicians (Guinea)
• Biyi Bandele, Author (Nigeria)
• Sokari Douglas Camp, Artist (Nigeria)
